Statement on the Use of Generative AI

Statement on the Use of Generative AI

The ICESCO Journal of Arabic Language (IJAL) recognizes the increasing role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools - such as ChatGPT, Bard, Claude, and others - in academic research and writing. While such technologies can support certain aspects of scholarly work, responsible and transparent use is essential to uphold the journal’s standards of academic integrity, authorship, and originality.

1. Permissible Use of GenAI

Authors may use GenAI tools to:

  • Improve grammar, clarity, and language style.
  • Translate text or assist in language editing.
  • Summarize existing content already written by the authors.

Such use must be disclosed in the submitted manuscript (e.g., in the acknowledgments or a dedicated statement), and authors remain fully responsible for the content and its accuracy.

2. Prohibited Use of GenAI

GenAI must not be used to:

  • Generate original research content or ideas.
  • Draft entire sections of the manuscript (e.g., introduction, discussion) without human oversight.
  • Fabricate references, data, or citations.
  • Substitute for critical thinking, analysis, or authorial interpretation.

Any manuscript found to include undisclosed or unethical use of GenAI - such as falsified data or fabricated citations - will be considered in breach of IJAL’s publication ethics and subject to editorial action.

3. Authorship

GenAI tools cannot be credited as authors under any circumstances. Authorship must be limited to individuals who meet the journal’s criteria for intellectual contribution and responsibility.

4. Editorial and Peer Review Use

IJAL’s editorial board and reviewers may use AI tools strictly for language checking or cross-referencing references or text similarity, but not for making or justifying editorial decisions.

5. Commitment to Ethical Publishing

IJAL is committed to the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing, as set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE et al, 2020). We encourage transparency in the use of emerging technologies and expect all contributors to disclose and use GenAI tools ethically.

6. How to Disclose GenAI Use (Sample Statement)?

"Portions of this manuscript (e.g., language editing, summarization) were supported by generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT by OpenAI). The authors have reviewed and verified the accuracy of all AI-assisted content."
